This is intended circumvent the Apache/Subversion protocol issue
described by Ian in the previous few commits.
Todo: If this works we can remove the uncompressed files again ...

from .xcf.gz to just .xcf (and uncompressing
the file too, of course!) unblocks the repository
access for svn checkouts etc.
Checkouts are currently broken because the
Apache server is mishandling files of .gz
type, and this is causing checksum errors
on file checkouts etc.
